PLAINS, PA 07/22/2010---
Mortgage Network (www.mortgagenetwork.com) will host a charity golf tournament and casino night on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the Mount Airy Golf Course, located at Mount Airy Casino & Resort in Mount Pocono, to benefit Friends of Ari Shumbres. Ari Shumbres is a two year old boy with a rare disease called VATER Association. This devastating disease requires numerous surgeries to repair multiple birth defects. To date, Ari has endured over 50 surgeries.
Ari's birth defects include esophageal astrea (his esophagus ended in a blind pouch(, tethered spinal cord (his right leg was pulled up in a frog-like position), rib fusion, and sacral (lower back) deformity. He also suffers from tracheomalacia asthma (spontaneous collapsing of the trachea). Ari's birth defects inhibit him from eating food by mouth. When he does eat, food frequently gets stuck causing him to choke and often requires surgery to remove the piece. This summer, he has had two surgeries a week trying to repair his esophagus, among other problems.
There are many more surgeries ahead for Ari, many of which are not covered by insurance. So, Jason Wiggins, Sales Manager of Mortgage Network in Plains, decided to take action. He attracted generous sponsorships from Mortgage Network, Hickey, O'Malley & Smith, Northeast Insurance & Financial Consultants, Reliable Abstract Company, and Roaring Brook Abstract, and raised $ 10,000. The proceeds will go to host a golf tournament where all registrations and donations will go directly to the Friends of Ari Shumbres Fund.
"We are delighted with the early responses," said Wiggins. "People are signing up to participate, and asking how they can donate even more. Our goal is to raise $ 15,000 to help Ari get his esophagus repaired so he can eat and live a more normal life."
The entry fee for golfers is $ 20 and includes a $ 15 slot-play credit, lunch and beer on the course, happy hour and dinner. For those just attending dinner, the fee $ 20 is and the first 100 through the door receive a $ 15 slot-play credit. For those interested in sponsoring a hole, the cost is $ 100. The event will have raffle prizes throughout the day and will also feature live music by recording artist Michael Tolcher.
